About the role:

D-Wave is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Service Engineer to help build and maintain our growing fleet of Quantum computing systems. In this role, you will join a team of smart, passionate engineers who care about making our systems run smoothly and creating the best experience for customers. 

This is a multi-disciplinary role involving applied mechanical, electrical, and cryogenic principles. Your primary responsibilities will include building, upgrading, maintaining, and troubleshooting/repairing complex quantum computing systems which are the foundation of our Leap™ quantum cloud service. In addition, you will use your expertise to help improve our systems and processes by working closely with our R&D teams. You will need to rely on excellent learning and problem-solving skills. There is no handbook for this role, but you’ll have the support and knowledge of the whole company to learn from. 

This role is based in Burnaby, BC, with occasional travel to field sites. You will also be expected to join an on-call rotation that supports our production systems. As a customer-facing role, building good relationships with our partners is an important aspect of the work.

What you will do:
  • Participate in system builds, installs, upgrades and maintenance 
  • Hands-on work and troubleshooting cryogenic and electro-mechanical systems in the lab and in the field 
  • Working closely with the hardware team to progress system design, reliability, and serviceability 
  • Developing and improving service and incident response procedures 
  • Build strong working relationships with partners and host facilities personnel 


About You:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, or the equivalent education and experience 
  • 3-5 years’ hands on experience maintaining and improving multi-disciplinary, complex, electro-mechanical systems in a lab and/or a production environment
  • Strong foundation in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and electro-mechanical devices  
  • Knowledge of scripting, PLC logic or programming languages such as Python and C/C++
  • Excellent critical thinking and hands-on problem-solving skills 
  • Strong organizational skills (ability to work on varied tasks with competing deadlines)
  • Strong English communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to travel internationally up to 10% of time without restrictions (valid passport)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment that is focused on priorities and end results 
  • Team player with ability to work independently on multiple projects 


Nice to Have:
  • Experience working with cryogenic systems and/or high vacuum systems 
  • Understanding of networking protocols, IT infrastructure, and Linux/UNIX operating systems 
  • Experience with P&IDs, fluid control systems, or electro-mechanical control systems 
  • Current or eligible to register as an Engineer-in training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with EGBC 
  • Experience providing technical support 
  • Experience in technical product development 


Additional Requirements:
  •  Must be willing to work flexible hours during busy periods (on-call rotation participation will be required) 
  • Willingness and ability to travel customer sites located across North America and Europe on occasion (~10%) 
  • Ability to obtain work authorization in the USA 
  • Ability to quickly obtain and maintain required security clearances as needed and to work on-site with highly secure and sensitive customers (which may include a background check)

$75,000 – $94,000 a year
