Quantum Sensing and Quantum Transduction- R&D Associate
Requisition Id 14078
Overview:
We are looking for a Research Staff Member for research efforts focused on quantum state transduction and quantum sensing. This position resides in the Quantum Heterostructures group, Foundational Materials Science section, Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate, at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 7,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
The expected duties and responsibilities include some but not necessarily all the following:
- Develop new approaches to high-efficiency, high-fidelity microwave-to-optical quantum state transduction.
- Develop new quantum sensing protocols suitable for probing fundamental excitations in correlated and topological quantum materials in cryogenic environments.
- Participate in new and ongoing cross-cutting research at the intersection of quantum sensing, quantum materials science, and quantum computing.
- Formulate novel solutions to problems of national interest and plan and execute the research and development necessary for the practical implementation of those solutions.
- Lead and take part in multiple R&D projects.
- Deliver science to DOE funded programs.
- Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely fashion.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
- Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
- Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity.
- Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.
Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in physics, materials science, or a closely related science discipline.
- Experience in experimental quantum sensing, quantum transduction, quantum materials science, and/or quantum device physics.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A strong record of productive and creative research proven by high-impact publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at major conferences.
- Extensive experience with dilution refrigeration and superconducting magnets.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international scientific audience.
- Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and in a team environment.
- Familiarity with numerical data analysis and customization of control software (LabVIEW/Matlab/Python).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
