We are seeking an exceptional Sr. Technical Manager – Electrical Engineering in our Broomfield, Colorado location to lead an Electrical Engineering department designing, building, testing, validating, and maintaining advanced technologies for trapped-ion quantum computing.  The leader will support and manage a team including electrical and test engineers and technicians as well as one or more direct-reporting, first-line managers.  The technical portfolio of the EE department includes a broad range of low-noise analog electronics, RF, PCB layout, digital design, and FPGA programming.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Accountable for on-time delivery against business needs, seeking out-of-the-box creative solutions when needed over business-as-usual to hit business commitments 
  • Instill a culture of using engineering best practices around work instructions, engineering documentation, BOM, and document management 
  • Identify and act on areas of improving team productivity
  • Build and design to reflect professional and aesthetic expectations of deployed hardware
  • From high-level business goals, synthesize strategic plans for the technical department, including technical scope, schedule, and budget
  • Develop and execute the strategy around contracting manufacturing against YoY targets 
  • Execute and achieve YoY cost reduction targets
  • Execute and achieve YoY cycle time improvement targets  
  • Identify and execute on outsourcing opportunities 
  • Technical deliverables must be designed for cost and manufacturability, as well as superior performance 


Own and manage execution of the above plans, including
  • Tracking and reporting of progress against the plan (with Program Management)
  • Department  resource allocation and prioritization to meet the milestones
  • Risk/opportunity identification and management
  • Accountability for all department results (technical performance, scope, schedule, cost) and interdependencies with partner organizations
  • Use of external partners and key suppliers to reduce hardware cost and cycle time


Identify department-level staffing needs and fill key gaps via
  • Mentorship, training, and managing of first-level managers
  • Hiring, Cross-training
  • Talent resource reviews
  • Real-time coaching and feedback
  • Succession planning
  • Skip-level meetings  


Serve as owner of all departmental lab spaces
  • Work with facilities, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), security, and IT as needed to communicate key requirements
  • Partner with above orgs to identify and implement compliant procedures and processes


YOU MUST HAVE:
  • Bachelor’s Degree minimum
  • Minimum 7+ years of industry experience developing advanced electronics systems
  • Minimum 2+ years of management experience with direct-reporting technical personnel
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. person (defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status)

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field preferred
  • Experience managing managers
  • Demonstrable expertise in one or more fields of electrical engineering (ie analog or digital design, RF systems, FPGA programming, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics and/or Quantum Computing
  • Experience in complex task management (cost, schedule, risk/opportunity, etc.)
  • A track record of high-technology (engineering, or physical science) development
  • Strong organizational & leadership skills; Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A cool, even-keeled temperament to keep conversations productive even in times of pressure and change
  • Cross-functional mentality: commitment to empowering and enabling all organizations within the business
  • Strategic thinking: aptitude for aligning tactical activities with strategic business objectives
  • Programmatic acumen: experience creating, driving, and tracking complex project plans
