Quantum Computing Experimental Research Scientist Internship 2025
Introduction
IBM Research Scientists are charting the future of Artificial Intelligence, creating breakthroughs in computing, discovering how blockchain will reshape the enterprise, and much more. Join a team that is dedicated to applying science to some of today’s most complex challenges, whether it’s discovering a new way for doctors to help patients, teaming with environmentalists to clean up our waterways or enabling retailers to personalize customer service.
Your Role and Responsibilities
This is for a 2025 summer internship with the following start dates: May – August or June – September for quarter system schools.
As an experimental research scientist with IBM Quantum, your job will be to advance the field of quantum computing by pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on today’s most advanced quantum hardware. You will develop and make first-of-a-kind demonstrations of new capabilities to extend the reach of IBM’s quantum processors. You will also work with theorists, experimentalists, and software engineers to design and execute groundbreaking demonstrations at the utility-scale, utilizing capabilities such as error mitigation and error suppression. Areas of interest for demonstrations include quantum simulation, chemistry, machine learning, high energy physics, condensed matter physics, and optimization.
Responsibilities include advancing the entire quantum computing technology stack and exploring applications to make quantum broadly usable and accessible. Collaborate with others in a research and development environment, participate in executive speaker series, and showcase effective problem-solving skills.”
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
