Chemist – Computational Chemistry Using Quantum Computing

Overview

The Physical and Computational Sciences Directorate (PCSD) researchers lead major R&D efforts in experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, high energy physics, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, and integrated high-performance and data-intensive computing.

PCSD is PNNL’s primary steward for research supported by the Department of Energy’s Offices of Basic Energy Sciences, Advanced Scientific Computing Research, and Nuclear Physics, all within the Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

Additionally, Directorate staff perform research and development for private industry and other government agencies, such as the Department of Defense and NASA. The Directorate’s researchers are members of interdisciplinary teams tackling challenges of national importance that cut across all missions of the Department of Energy.

Responsibilities

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), in partnership with experts from universities, industry, and national laboratories, is actively engaged in exploring and developing quantum computing algorithms. These algorithms are designed to tackle complex challenges in catalysis, actinide chemistry, and geochemistry, where traditional computing methods may encounter significant computational barriers.

In line with our commitment to advancing quantum information sciences, PNNL is searching for a scientific leader to spearhead the development of innovative quantum algorithms for describing chemical systems and processes. This role presents a rare opportunity to expand our quantum computing portfolio towards scalable quantum computing in close collaboration with a diverse community of computational chemists at PNNL.

The ideal candidate will possess expertise in quantum chemistry and a strong background in developing scalable quantum algorithms for electronic structure theory. In addition, the selected candidate will play a pivotal role in charting new paths for the laboratory and fostering strategic collaborations at internal, national, and international levels. Furthermore, the incumbent will be instrumental in shaping PNNL’s broader quantum computing strategy and will be expected to drive the development of new externally funded programs.

  • Lead the development of scalable quantum computing algorithms for quantum chemistry applications
  • Establish research collaborations in the area of quantum computing throughout PNNL
  • Establish a DOE ASCR or BES funded research portfolio

Moreover, PNNL Scientist and Engineer Level 5 position responsibilities include the following:

  • Conceiving, planning, and realizing lab-level R&D strategies and objectives
  • Planning, organizing, and guiding complex national and international programs
  • Capturing funding to support complex, strategically influential project teams
  • Defining and building new and enduring capabilities or technical areas across directorates and/or institutions
  • Modeling and promoting quality, safety, security, and inclusivity
  • Serving as a resource to lab level operational improvement activities
  • Building and leading multi-institutional teams that influence the national science and technology agenda
  • Leading Laboratory and/or sponsor strategic initiatives to expand capabilities for transformational solutions to complex scientific and technical challenges
  • Mentoring and developing staff across PNNL and collaborating institutions
